Introduction

This simulation allows to experience using a screen reader. A website, the University of Antarctica, is presented like a screen reader. Keyboard shortcuts are available to navigate the site and find information.

Instructions

When you run the simulation, you will see a screen with a few keyboard shortcuts you can use to navigate the website. These are not exactly the same keyboard shortcuts as screen readers, but the idea is the same: you can not use your mouse, you are limited to the functionality of your keyboard.

You will also see a list of tasks to be performed during the simulation.

  1. Find the name of the founder of the University of Antarctica (AU).
  2. Find the phone number of the AU.
  3. Find the course registration for class 250 Bio.

Check if you are able to perform these tasks. If you feel the frustration of not easily find the information in this simulation, it is because WebAIM designed it that way. Blind users are often frustrated by the difficulty finding or accessing Web content.

WebAIM has listed the keyboard shortcuts and the tasks in this simulation to those who read this page with a screen reader and / or Braille.

Remark

This simulation requires the Shockwave plug-in . Although Shockwave is not generally considered very accessible, WebAIM added subtitles and audio to increase accessibility for deaf and blind people. WebAIM nevertheless recognizes that certain types of disabilities (eg , people who are both deaf and blind) may not be able to access the simulation. However, these people probably do not need to simulate something with which they are probably already familiar.

The simulation

Run the simulation WebAIM screen reader (English) (this simulation is a 2.42 MB file because of the sound recordings).
